If you're a photo restoration expert (or if you have some photo restoration skills) you can volunteer to help restore the photos they have scanned (they currently have over a thousand and they're holding scanning events on a fairly regular basis so more are being added). Quite the challenge with the water damage, mildew and discolouration. I started with a basic colour adjustment and then went to work with the healing brush and clone tool. Lots of layers and reconstruction along the way but I cleaned it up and it's looking good. I hope the family agrees.Lindsey hendersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02324647113382176632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5495648025891902786.post-16540988262451700282012-05-19T19:58:00.001-07:002012-05-19T20:06:36.822-07:00prevent the loss of your family photos and memories
One of the first things most people think/talk about if they've experienced a fire, flood or natural disaster is the loss of all their photos (assuming their loved ones are safe and well). Ask anyone what they'd grab if their house was on fire (and they knew all their loved ones were safe) - probably 99% would say they'd grab photos.
Disaster strikes suddenly and quickly so there usually Lindsey hendersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02324647113382176632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5495648025891902786.post-4826854696781349622012-05-19T14:20:00.001-07:002012-05-27T22:47:50.936-07:00from the ashes...May 18 restoration
This is the image I worked with.... Stewart StG (St. George) is my ancestor. I'm not sure if he's the one standing by the car or the driver - I'll have to do some research.
Fortunately this one wasn't crispy like many of the other photos but it clearly has damage.
Under the car and in the bottom left corner there's discolouration from heat or water (or both). There's a fair bit of ash stuckLindsey hendersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02324647113382176632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5495648025891902786.post-75969285851658086452012-05-17T21:34:00.000-07:002012-05-17T21:34:09.687-07:00Operation Photo Rescue

One of them required a dremel to cut off the burnt edges of plastic. Big job! Still have lots to scan and ALL of them to clean up and edit.

and then vacuumed out and finally clean!

Over the past few months, since my mom's house burned down just before Christmas, Laura and I have been recovering and restoring our family foties. They were in Duncan's office which was pretty well the epicentre of the fire. The Sir Charles Tupper settee was incinerated and it looked like all the albums were destroyed too but on closer inspection we found they were salvageable. So we salvaged Lindsey hendersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02324647113382176632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5495648025891902786.post-40820366146456905282012-04-28T16:06:00.002-07:002012-04-29T00:19:01.737-07:00mini restoration
The other day a friend of mine, Cathy, posted this picture of her sister, her mum and herself on facebook
I thought I'd take a stab at this and see what I could do. Here is the result....
I cleaned up some stray spots, applied the sharpen filter and made some colour, level, brightness and contrast adjustments
Cathy was surprised and please. This is what Lindsey hendersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02324647113382176632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5495648025891902786.post-44223817432923469702012-04-28T16:02:00.002-07:002012-04-29T00:21:13.525-07:00starting the process

separating the photos from the albums... Before the digital age photos were developed and processed in liquid so using water is the way to go to separate photos that are stuck together. In December, a week before Christmas, these photos were burned in a fire but I was able to rescue the albums and get them ready for restoration. The room they were in was the epicentre of the fire but the photos weren't incinerated since they were so closely packed (thankfully!). They were, however, badly burned and smoke damaged. So I took the albums and popped them in my deep freeze until I Lindsey hendersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02324647113382176632noreply@blogger.com0
